A Wacky World of Football
Thursday, October 14, 2004

if u've been living in a different world than me (which i do think so!!), you've probably haven't heard all the hype-surrounding Beckham.. yea.. the most famous footballer in the WORLD.. or proabably not famous enough if u haven't heard about him..

i just read an article about David Beckham (ha!! good Ajla).. you suppose to read Guyton or Moore.. not about David Beckham..

i think i wrote about his wonder goal against Wales the other day.. hmm 4 days after that, i think i got the wrong story for that game.. the HO-HA is not about his goal that save England's day.. it's about his booking.

ok, let's recap :

76th minute, Beckham curled shot fired straight into the top right-hand corner of Paul Jones' goal. Some would, and did say that such a great goal - one he describes as one of his best ever - was tarnished by the following events.

Having been fouled by Wales defender Ben Thatcher, the England skipper realised he was injured, (he sustained a rib injury which is set to keep him sidelined for about a month) and consequently deliberately set out to get himself a yellow card knowing full well he would be banned for the next game because he'd picked up a caution in an earlier match. So he went full pelt into Thatcher again, and the referee had no choice but to brandish the yellow card at his retaliatory challenge. And so he misses Wednesday night's qualifier with Azerbaijan, but he would have missed it anyway because of the rib injury

one note about English media : they're so obsessive when it came to BEckham.. sadly, not about his talented skills.. they love to write about his Family, the'scandal', the other-stuff beside football that obviously ridicule him for all of that.. and this is just another thing..

this incident apparently give the critics another chance to to belittle Becks and they jumped straight on his back with headlines like "He Should Know Better", "Stupid Becks" and "Grow Up Becks", and seemingly not giving him the credit he deserved for having scored such a wonderful goal.

His consequent revelations that the second tackle was pre-meditated sparked a major debate. Becks told the Daily Telegraph: "I'm sure some people think I've not got the brains to be that clever." In his mind he did it for the good of the team - so he can start the next round of qualifiers without having a caution and the threat of suspension hanging over his head.

clever? not really.. if you are not David BEckham, he probably can get away with it.. but, you are the David Beckham.. Captain of England squad.. even . Stepp Blatter (yep, the FIFA president that encourge less cloth for Woman soccer team, while fined the Cameroon team for having a one-piece jersey which basically covers everything up and down), Sir Geoff Hurst demanded that Becks be stripped of his captaincy - as did many of the daily papers.

a little bit harsh isn't it? for this one little incident, that doesnt do any hurt for anyone.. even Thacher doesnt get hurt by that fouless tackle and he not even complain nor the Wales coach.
probably it got to about ethics and being a captain, means you have to be a role model.. but, who are we want to fool, everyone cheats in football.. try ask about all those 'alleged' divers who trying to get penalty.. that's not ethical also, right?

as per usual, the media have made a mountain out of a rather normal every day molehill.

Beckham did apologise for what he did, ""I was asked a question and made a frank and honest admission to counter the negative speculation. I now know that was wrong and apologise to the FA, the England coach, my team-mates and all England fans." and ""I have also apologised personally to my manager Sven-Goran Eriksson. I know that as captain you are in a privileged position and must always abide by Fifa's code of fair play, something which I have always done throughout my career."

yep, remember not to do that again, Becks..

but, he made a good point in his last words.. he has abide the rule, but, this little mistakes just made everyone forget what good has he done to the team.. he's such an inspirational skipper, always live up the reputation when they need him.. probably not last night, when Owen step up as the acting-captain scoring a much needed goal to silence critics about his troublesome time in Madrid.. but, that's against Azerbaijan..

maybe, it just the way world works.. people doesnt always remember the good you have done... they just love to point out even the silliest mistake you've ever done and just rub it in.. either you just watch every step you made and pray it works all the time or you just let it go and think about the future and learn from it.. sounds a very perfect resolution isn't it? but, that life, you dont know what's right or wrong.. one things that seems right to you, doesnt mean the other 1 million people will agree.. and in David Beckham cas, that's just what you have to pay being David Beckham
